Reading isn't a school skill. It's a life skill.

How it works

A ladder of mentors. Each step reaches down.

  1. 1 Youth Mentors

    Professionals mentor teens

Adults from Youth Mentors train and guide every high schooler in the program.

  2. 2 Reading Buddies

    Teens mentor kids

Trained teens read with young kids every week, one on one, in supervised places.

  3. 3 The next generation

    Kids grow into readers

And one day, into mentors themselves. The ladder keeps growing.

Everyone gets lifted.

Mentor levels

Three levels. One path up.

Level 2

Reading Coach

Level 3

Lead

Trains new buddies and helps run sessions at their site. The top of the ladder.

Everyone can join. You earn your level.

Why it works

Both sides learn.

Research across 32 studies shows older students tutoring younger ones helps both of them grow.3

Kids read better

Weekly one-on-one time with an older buddy builds skills and confidence a classroom can't always give.

Teens grow as leaders

Teaching someone else builds patience, responsibility and real experience for college and beyond.

Parents get involved

Families hear from us in their own language: English, Spanish or Haitian Creole.
